Most city offices, including City Hall, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Owner surrender intakes are a significant part of Fort Worth’s shelter pet population. There are currently not enough adoptions taking place to balance out intakes.
Although it is difficult to make the decision to surrender a pet, it is important to understand that there are options available to Fort Worth residents who can no longer care for their pets. Unfortunately, surrendering your pet to a shelter may result in a need to euthanize.
If you or somebody you know are thinking about turning in a pet to a shelter, consider these alternatives:
Look into the assistance for pet owners available at Fort Worth Animal Care & Control. Organizations offer low-cost resources and programs to help reduce the number of pets being surrendered and to keep people and pets together. Here are a few:

Local rescue groups may be willing to take in the pet or assist in finding a new home. Rescue groups may help directly or point you to a group that can provide help. The City works in conjunction with many rescues, including these:
Contacting friends, family, neighbors and colleagues can help your pet find a home. Social media can be a great way to get the word out, too. It is important in these situations to ensure the pet is going to a good home.
By no means should an animal be deserted and abandoned. While individual circumstances may be difficult, there are options and assistance available. Pets are family, and families deserve to stay together.
