It's National Dog Day. Here are Detroit's top 5 dog names, breeds – Detroit Free Press

Thursday is objectively one of the most important days of the year: National Dog Day.
In a year defined by loss and loneliness, dogs have been a constant beam of light, always down for a good cuddle and never failing to put us in a good mood (if you can get past the never-ending barking while you’re on a Zoom call, that is).
Dog adoptions soared during the pandemic as more people were stuck at home and wanting company.

Metro Detroiters love their dogs, so it’s only right to properly celebrate the holiday. Here’s a look at the most popular dog names and breeds in Detroit, compiled by dog care website Rover:
Your dog probably won’t be expecting much for the holiday, and they’d be thrilled just getting to spend time with you. Take 30 minutes after work to take them to the park and run around, or scratch behind their ears for an extra few minutes. They’ll appreciate the little things.
If you’re looking to go all out, you can treat your pet with a trip to a dog park, a leisurely hike, a dog-friendly beach, or a dog-friendly restaurant.
Celebrating National Dog Day also means honoring those that served.
The Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon is home to hundreds of America’s four-legged veterans.
The cemetery is free to visit, open to the public and a great way to show your love for dogs.
Detroit’s Animal Care and Control reached capacity a few weeks ago and is searching for community members to adopt.
“We are not just full, we are beyond full … we may be forced to euthanize animals because we’ve run out of room,” Mark Kumpf, director of Detroit Animal Care, told WDIV-TV (Channel 4) in July.
National Dog Day might just be the perfect day to go to a shelter and adopt a dog to celebrate with.
